Union Minister and BJP's West Bengal unit president Sukanta Majumdar on Friday said that the alleged gang rape at a Kolkata law college highlights the growing concern over the safety of female students in educational institutions across the state.
He further pointed out that the Kolkata law college student gang rape case comes close on the heels of the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last year—an incident that had sparked nationwide protests.
A student of the South Calcutta Law College was allegedly raped inside the institution by an alumnus, even as two seniors of the educational institution assisted the prime accused in the crime, a police officer said on Friday. All three accused were arrested and produced in court which remanded them in police custody for four days, reported PTI.
Speaking on the Kolkata law college student gang rape incident, Majumdar, the Union Minister of State for Education, alleged that the law-and-order situation in West Bengal is "in shambles" even though the police (Home) department is under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
After the rape-murder of an on-duty doctor in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last year, the alleged incident of gang rape of a student has been reported from a law college in Kolkata, which only goes on to prove that "female students are not safe in educational institutions" in the state, the BJP leader said.
Majumdar also referred to the killing of a girl in a bomb explosion recently during a TMC victory rally taken out before the results of the Kaliganj Assembly bypoll were announced.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, condemning the gang rape incident, said that a huge protest will be organised across the state.
"Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has no right to stay put in her chair. She should resign," he said.
Adhikari alleged that senior officers of Kolkata Police have been in Digha, where the chief minister is participating in the Rath Yatra from the newly inaugurated Jagannath temple.
TMC leader Jaiprakash Majumdar, urging the leader of the opposition to control his vociferous criticism, said, "Instead of politicising the issue, a constructive approach should be taken to stop such crimes."
