One of the prime accused in the Howrah sex and pornographic film racket, Ariyan Khan, was arrested by West Bengal Police on Wednesday. He was hiding in the Golf Green area of south Kolkata, stated a senior officer.
According to the police, Khan's accomplices have also been apprehended. The officer further informed that Khan was on the run for five days before getting arrested. His mother Shweta, alias Fultusi, who is also an accused in the case, is still on the run, reported PTI.
"We have held Ariyan from a residence in Golf Green. He is currently being questioned. We will share the details of our investigation with you in some time," Howrah Police Commissioner Praveen Tripathi told reporters.
Earlier, Howrah city police had detained Shweta’s mother for questioning. Shweta’s three-year-old daughter was also rescued by the police from the residence of an unidentified person in Kolkata.
The sex racket came to light after a 22-year-old woman from Panihati area in North 24 Parganas managed to escape the clutches of the mother-son who had allegedly confined her in their Bankra-Fakirpara flat in Domjur, Howrah. She was held captivate for the past six months and brutally tortured for not agreeing to shoot pornographic content and work as a bar dancer, reported PTI.
The woman alleged she was lured to the accused’s residence on the pretext of a job offer at his event management company, which was later found to be a fake entity by the police and a front for the Howrah sex racket run by the mother and son.
The survivor is currently undergoing treatment at the critical care unit of the state-run Sagar Dutta Hospital with serious and multiple injuries on her head, limbs and internal organs, PTI reported.
Taking suo-motu cognisance of the case, the National Commission for Women has filed a petition to the West Bengal Deputy General Police (DGP), demanding that a swift action be taken within the next 48 hours. The commission has also directed the state authorities to provide free medical care and psychological counselling to the woman.
The woman's mother also allegedly wrote to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused and justice for her daughter after her physical condition deteriorated since Tuesday evening.
