Western Railway (WR) has recovered fines worth Rs 43.54 crore through its intensive ticket-checking campaigns conducted between April and May, as part of efforts to ensure hassle-free and comfortable travel for genuine passengers. The drives targeted ticketless commuters across Mumbai suburban services, long-distance Mail/Express and passenger trains, as well as holiday special trains.
In a press release issued by WR’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Vineet Abhishek, the Mumbai Suburban section alone accounted for Rs 11.71 crore of the total amount collected.
The ticket-checking operations were carried out under the supervision of senior commercial officers.
In May alone, WR detected over 3.02 lakh cases of ticketless travel, including instances involving unbooked luggage, resulting in fines totalling Rs 21.65 crore. Of these, more than 1.04 lakh cases were found in the Mumbai Suburban network, generating Rs 5.71 crore in fines.
To curb unauthorised entry into air-conditioned local trains, WR also conducted frequent surprise checks during this period. Under this initiative, over 10,300 unauthorised travellers were penalised, leading to the collection of around Rs 35 lakh.

Neral-Aman Lodge train services suspended for monsoon
The Central Railway on Wednesday announced the suspension of regular passenger train services between Neral and Aman Lodge on the Neral–Matheran narrow gauge line during the monsoon season.
The suspension of services will be in effect from June 1, 2025 to October 15, 2025, due to safety concerns during heavy rains, an official statement said.
However, shuttle train services between Matheran and Aman Lodge will continue to operate during this period. These shuttles will help visitors and locals travel to and from Matheran, it said.
Last month, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had stated that monsoon in Mumbai has arrived earlier this year.
The Mumbai has been receiving rains on regular intervals recently.
