In a major relief to the families residing in BDD chawls, Mumbai Suburban Guardian Minister Ashish Shelar said the keys to their newly constructed homes will be handed over ahead of the auspicious Shravan month.

He made the announcement during a public interaction led by Milind Borikar, the Chief Executive Officer of the Mumbai Board of Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA). Shelar also undertook a detailed inspection of the newly constructed towers of the Worli BDD Chawl Redevelopment Project.

The high-rise buildings, developed in the first phase of the ambitious redevelopment initiative, are now structurally complete. However, a number of concerns raised by resident regarding amenities and infrastructure remain unresolved.

During his inspection, Shelar spent around two hours engaging with the residents.

One of the prominent concerns raised by the residents is the issue of adequate water supply. The minister has directed officials from MHADA and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to ensure installation of new water pipelines for the residents.

Another point of contention was the availability of parking. One of the planned parking towers remains unfinished. To mitigate the issue, Shelar proposed the temporary demolition of two adjoining, dilapidated buildings to create additional parking space. Accordingly, Borikar stated that the additional space will be created by demolishing the buildings and parking be allotted to residents through a transparent lottery system.

Borikar also assured that essential facilities — including piped gas connections — will be fully operational before residents move in.

The BDD Chawl Redevelopment Project, one of Mumbai’s largest urban regeneration schemes, aims to transform the century-old chawl structures into modern housing complexes, while retaining a strong focus on resident welfare and infrastructure resilience.

Dharavi's redevelopment our social commitment: Eknath Shinde

A day after the master plan of the ambitious Dharavi redevelopment project in Mumbai got approval from the Maharashtra government, Deputy CM Eknath Shinde on Thursday said that Dharavi's redevelopment is the government's social commitment.

Dharavi, once known as Asia’s largest slum, will soon become one of the most well-planned redeveloped locations in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Shinde said.

Meanwhile, a review meeting on the Dharavi redevelopment project chaired by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was held at Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai on May 28.

“This redevelopment is not just a dream, but a social promise. Dharavi will become a symbol of social justice and economic empowerment,” Eknath Shinde said after the meeting.

He assured that all departments involved are working together, and efforts are being made to overcome any hurdles.

The Rs 95,790 crore mega project is a public-private partnership with the state government holding a 20 per cent stake and the Adani Group holding 80 per cent.
