The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC) of the Indian Railways has received an overwhelming response to its newly launched Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Circuit Train Tour, which will depart from Mumbai on June 9.
The tour is designed to celebrate and showcase the valour, legacy, and life of the great Maratha warrior king, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. According to IRCTC, 710 passengers have booked tickets for the tour across three categories — 480 in Economy (Sleeper Class), 190 in Comfort (3AC), and 40 in Superior (2AC).
The six-day heritage journey is a collaborative effort between the Maharashtra Government, Indian Railways and IRCTC, to connect tourists with history, through some of the most iconic forts and temples across Maharashtra.
The circuit kicks from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) makes its first halt at Raigad Fort, where the Maratha warrior king was crowned. On Day 1, passengers will travel to Mangaon – the closest railhead to Raigad – before heading towards Pune for accommodation and dinner.
On Day 2, tourists will be taken to Lal Mahal, Kasba Ganpati Temple, and Shivsrushti — a vast historical theme park that narrates Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s life through 3D shows and interactive exhibits.
On the third day of the journey, tourists will visit the Shivneri Fort, the birthplace of the Chhatrapati, followed by a visit to the revered Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga Temple before returning to Pune for the night.
On Day 4, they will make their journey to the Pratapgarh Fort near Satara, where the famed battle between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Afzal Khan was fought, laying the foundation of the Maratha Empire. After lunch, the tourists leave for Kolhapur.
On Day 5, the tourists will be taken to the sacred Mahalakshmi Temple, followed by the Panhala Fort, where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his trusted commander Baji Prabhu Deshpande fought valiantly. The fort’s serpentine shape lends it the name "Fort of Snakes".
The train will return to Mumbai on Day 6, marking the conclusion of this historical tour.
