Central Railway undertook a tree plantation drive in line with its broader commitment to increasing green cover and reducing carbon emissions.
The Central Railway launched its new âGo Green' initiative, alongside a series of environment-focused activities, at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai on the occasion of World Environment Day 2025, commemorated annually on June 5.
The initiative started with an âEnvironment Pledge', administered by Central Railway General Manager Dharam Veer Meena, alongside all Principal Heads of Departments (PHODs), senior headquarters officers, and staff. The pledge was also broadcast via video conference by the Member of Traction and Rolling Stock (MTRS), Railway Board.
In his address, Meena underscored the critical role trees play in sustaining life on Earth, both ecologically and environmentally. He highlighted the numerous benefits of trees, not only in providing oxygen, shade, and shelter but also in acting as natural protectors during thunderstorms by safely diverting electrical discharges away from populated areas.
Following the pledge ceremony, Meena, along with senior officers, led a large-scale tree plantation drive. During this event, 100 saplings were planted on the premises, with plans to plant a total of 500 saplings in the coming days. This initiative is in line with Central Railway's broader commitment to increasing green cover and reducing carbon emissions.

Meena also inaugurated an exhibition focused on eco-friendly alternatives to plastic. The exhibition featured edible cutlery made from pulses and displayed various types of plastics, educating visitors about the environmental hazards posed by plastic waste. The exhibition, aligned with the global theme of âEnd Plastic Pollution', was designed to promote awareness and encourage behavioural change towards more sustainable practices.
The day's activities culminated in an awareness rally led by Meena at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, which saw the enthusiastic participation from railway staff, Bharat Scouts & Guides, and the Civil Defence team.
Participants marched through the station precincts, spreading the message of environmental conservation and the urgent need to combat plastic pollution.
A similar rally was organised at CSMT, where the station staff engaged with passengers, educating them on the significance of World Environment Day 2025 and urging them to adopt eco-friendly practices in their daily lives.
Speaking on the occasion, Meena called on all railway personnel to adopt environmentally responsible practices, urging them to consider sustainable alternatives in their daily work. He reiterated that preserving nature is crucial not just for today but for the future generations.
