The police on Tuesday said that a 39-year-old worker has died after falling from the fourth floor of an under-construction building in Maharashtra's Thane district, reported news agency PTI.

A case has been registered against the builder and the contractor for negligence in connection with the incident which occurred at 1.35 pm on Sunday at a site located on Khardi Road in Kausa area, an official from Mumbra police station said.

"The victim has been identified as Arjun Kishori Patwa, a resident of Diva Colony. He was doing a plastering job on the fourth floor of the under-construction building when he accidentally fell and succumbed to his injuries on the spot," the official said, reported PTI.

A preliminary inquiry has indicated the builder and the contractor failed to provide basic safety measures, such as the personal protective equipment (PPE), to the deceased, he said, reported PTI.

This gross negligence on their part led to the fatal accident, the official said.

A case has been registered against the builder and the contractor under sections 106 (death by negligence) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. No arrest has been made so far, the police said.

"We are collecting technical evidence and recording statements of witnesses present at the site. Legal action will follow based on the outcome of the ongoing probe," the official said.

Man held for assaulting acquaintance in dispute over liquor bottle

In another case, police have arrested a man for allegedly assaulting an acquaintance after a fight over a broken liquor bottle in Maharashtra's Thane district, an official said on Tuesday, reported PTI.

The incident took place in the wee hours of Sunday near Kopar railway station's skywalk, the official from Dombivli police station said.

He said the victim, the accused, and a couple of others were consuming liquor near the skywalk. An argument broke out after the victim's friend broke the accused man's beer bottle, reported PTI.

Angered by this, the accused assaulted the victim with a stone and then stepped on his neck in an attempt to strangle him, the official said.

The complainant was able to remove the accused's foot in time, he said.

The official said a case was registered under sections 110 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 118(1)(voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
